Write On! Story Contest 2010

Call for Entries!

The annual Write On! Story Contest, formerly The WestSide Story Contest, is open to all genres of literary fiction. The contest, in its sixth year, is now hosted by the Berkeley Branch of the California Writers Club. Started in the early 1900s by Jack London and his writing friends, the CWC is the third oldest organization of its kind in the country.

First Prize: $250, 2nd Prize: $100, 3rd Prize: $50

This year’s judge, Marilyn Abildskov, is the author of The Men in My Country, a memoir set in Japan. Her fiction, essays, and poems have been published in such literary magazines as Puerto del Sol, Hotel Amerika, New Orleans Review, and Southern Review. She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area and teaches in the MFA Program at Saint Mary’s College of California.

The three prize-winning stories will be published on our website at: www.cwc-berkeley.com. Authors of honorary mentions will be credited by name and title of their work on the website. Winners will be notified in the first week of November.

Submission Guidelines:

Submission window: July 1 – October 1. Entry fee per story: $13.

All submissions must be in English, previously unpublished, 2200 words or fewer, double-spaced, 12pt serif type. Please put your name, address, e-mail address, story title and word count on the cover page. In the manuscript, story title only. Please indicate where you have heard about us.

Electronic and paper submissions, as well as multiple entries and entries from outside the U.S., are welcome. Entrants retain rights to their stories and are responsible for all copyright issues related to their work.

“Autumn in the Redwoods”

Join friends and members of the California Writers Club for a three day Writers Retreat in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Attend workshops, write alone or in groups, swim in the pool, and hike the wooded trails. Evenings can be spent under the stars and around the bonfire in the company of fellow writers.
