David Pokorny
Writing Comedy, What’s So Funny? Part II
Stand-up comic and storyteller David Pokorny’s Writer’s Forum February workshop was so successful, he’s back for an encore. David Pokorny Part II will take place on Thursday, April 19 from 7 to 9 PM. The event will be held at the Petaluma Community Center at Lucchesi Park, 320 N. McDowell Blvd. $15 at the door.
POKORNY, the creator and host of the award-winning monthly storytelling show, West Side Stories, was able to make his living as a stand-up comic touring the western half of the U.S. for a decade, opening up for such talents as Jim Carrey and Ellen DeGeneres. After becoming the house emcee at San Francisco’s #1 comedy club and a regular on the Vegas strip, he gave it all up to pursue a lucrative career as a stay-at-home dad. Seven macaroni & cheese filled years later he returns to the stage.

Ransom Stephens
The Writers Toolbox: The irony of effective dialog
Dialog brings characters to life, but it’s tricky. If we write the way people talk, the dialog feels flat and ironically artificial. Dialog can be used to convey character and motivate plot but must be done carefully. The solution is simple: when two people talk, they aren’t both having exactly the same conversation. With plenty of fun examples and exercises, Ransom teaches you how to write fresh, crisp dialog that resonates character and keeps stories moving.
The event will be held at the Petaluma Community Center, 320 N. McDowell Blvd., Petaluma. Cost is $15 at the door.
RANSOM STEPHENS is a novelist, science writer, speaker, and physicist. He’s written over 300 articles on impossible subjects like quantum physics and parenting teenagers, produces events for Litquake, and co-produces two literary series. His first novel, The God Patent, was “the first debut novel to emerge from the new paradigm of online publishing” according to the SF Chronicle and has spent over a year on several top ten lists. His second novel, The Sensory Deception, is forthcoming.
